Simplified EU Machinery Directive Table

The table below is a simplified digest of the table from Article 12 of the European Union Machinery Directive . If the equipment to be purchased is listed in the table, find or calculate the noise emission sound power level limit, based on the equipment power and/or other design or operating parameters. Use this number as the baseline criterion.

Sound Descriptors Used in the Table

P

Mechanical Power in kW

Pel

Electrical Power in kW

m

Mass of appliance in kg

L

Cutting width in cm

Baseline Sound Power Level Criteria for Selected Equipment Types1
Equipment Type Net installed power Permissible Sound Power Level (LWA)2
Compaction machines (vibrating rollers, vibratory plates, vibratory rammers) P ≤ 8 108
8 < P ≤ 70 109
P > 70 89 + 11 log P
Tracked dozers, tracked loaders, tracked excavator loaders P ≤ 55 106
P > 55 87 + 11 log P
Wheeled dozers, wheeled loaders, wheeled excavators-loaders, dumpers, graders, loader-type landfill compaction machines (non-vibrating rollers), paver-finishers, hydraulic power packs P ≤ 55 104
P > 55 85 + 11 log P
Single-engined mobile cranes P ≤ 55 101
P > 55 82 + 11 log P
Excavators, builders’ hoists for the transport of goods, construction winches, motor hoes P ≤ 15 93
P > 15 80 + 11 log P
Hand-held concrete-breakers and picks m ≤ 15 105
15 < m 94 + 11 log m
Tower cranes All P 96 + log P
Welding and power generators3 Pel ≤ 2 95 + log Pel
2 > Pel 96 + log Pel
Compressors P ≤ 15 97
P > 15 95 + 2 log P
Lawnmowers, lawn trimmers/lawn edge trimmers L ≤ 15 96
50 < L ≤ 120 98
70 < L ≤ 120 100
L > 120 105
1 The European Machinery Noise Directive presumes particular loading points that may not be applicable in North America. For example, the cooling fan speeds necessary to deal with North American summer conditions (35 °C) may elevate the noise emission by 3–6 dBA relative to European conditions.
2 The permissible sound power level shall be rounded up or down to the nearest whole number (less than 0,5 use lower number, greater than or equal to 0,5 use higher number).
3 Pel for welding generators: conventional welding current multiplied by the conventional load voltage for the lowest value of the duty factor given by the manufacturer.
